The STA-960 is a stereo AM/FM receiver produced under the Realistic brand, which served as RadioShack/Tandy’s house label. Technics SE-A100 Stereo Power Amplifier 

The SE-A100, introduced by Technics in 1985, is a high-end stereo power amplifier that features a unique Class AA topology, specifically a "VC-4" configuration, which combines separate voltage control amplifiers and current drive amplifiers. During its production run, the amplifier was priced at approximately ¥300,000 when new in Japan.

Circuit & Design Details

Class AA / VC-4 Architecture

• For each stereo  channel, there are two amplifiers: one for controlling voltage (voltage control amp), and one for providing current to drive the load (current drive amp). So the setup is “voltage amp + current amp” per channel. Because of this separation, the voltage amp is not burdened by the demands of big current swings, which improves distortion and linearity.
• “AA” meaning voltage amp works in Class A region, and the current amp handles the heavier load (usually more efficient) but is arranged so as to not degrade the voltage amplifier’s performance. That gives some of the sonic purity of pure class A, with better power efficiency for driving real speakers. 

Output Stages, Power Supply, Layout

• Voltage control amplifier output stage uses Darlington configuration with differential input (dual FET) and output transistors Pc150Wx2 channels. This amplifier is a full A-class device for that stage.
• The current drive amplifier has a 4-stage Darlington output, uses FET differential front end, a high speed amplitude amplifier stage, and a newly developed feed-forward bootstrap power supply. It also uses multiple parallel output transistors (3-parallel per output transistor) to handle high current.
• Power supply: 3-transformer configuration. Separate transformers for the left/right current drive amps, and separate for left/right voltage drive amps. Fully symmetrical (dual mono aspects) to reduce crosstalk and inter-channel interference.

• The STA-960 shows many of the hallmarks of late-70s / early-80s hi-fi: brushed metal (silver) front panel, solid metal knobs, wood-veneered or solid wood sides or cabinet, a beveled glass (or at least glass-fronted) tuner dial and analog meters.
• It has glowing meters for signal strength and tuning, which gives it a classic look. 

Controls & Inputs

• Inputs typically include: Phono, AUX, Tape Monitor(s), Tuner.
• Tone controls: bass, treble. Also there are Loudness, a Hi-Cut and Lo-Cut filter.
• Speaker switching: Two sets of speakers (“A” & “B”). There’s mention that in one position the “A” speakers can be reversed left↔right (a sort of speaker swap) — interesting but rare. 

Tuner

• AM / BC (Broadcast) tuner band; AM + FM.
• FM de-emphasis option on the front panel (for matching to different country standards of pre-emphasis / de-emphasis) in some units.
